Comrade Tran Duc Thang has been assigned to the position of Secretary of the Hanoi City Party Committee.
The Politburo has decided to assign Comrade Tran Duc Thang, a member of the Politburo and Minister of Agriculture and Environment, as the Secretary of the Hanoi City Party Committee for the 2025-2030 term.
On the afternoon of April 8th, the Hanoi City Party Committee held a conference to announce the Politburo's decision on personnel matters.
Attending and directing the conference were comrades: Tran Cam Tu - Member of the Political Bureau, Standing Secretary of the Central Committee; Nguyen Duy Ngoc - Member of the Political Bureau, Secretary of the Central Committee, Head of the Central Organization Department; Pham Thi Thanh Tra - Secretary of the Central Committee, Deputy Prime Minister; along with representatives of the Hanoi City leadership, leaders of departments, agencies, communes and wards of the city.
The Politburo decided to transfer, assign, and appoint Comrade Tran Duc Thang - Member of the Politburo, Minister of Agriculture and Environment - to participate in the Executive Committee and Standing Committee of the Hanoi City Party Committee and to hold the position of Secretary of the Hanoi City Party Committee for the 2025-2030 term.
Comrade Tran Duc Thang was born in 1973 in Phu Tho province. He holds a PhD in economics, a Master's degree in economics, and a Bachelor's degree in finance and banking. He is currently a member of the Politburo of the 14th Party Congress.
During his career, prior to October 2018, he held the position of Deputy Director, and later Director of the Department of Public Assets Management (Ministry of Finance).
He was elected a member of the 12th Central Inspection Committee in October 2018. In 2020, he held the position of Vice Chairman of the 12th Central Inspection Committee.
At the 13th National Congress of the Party (January 2021), he was elected a member of the 13th Central Committee and also a member of the Central Inspection Committee. In February 2021, he was appointed to the position of Vice Chairman of the 13th Central Inspection Committee.
In October 2022, he was transferred and assigned by the Politburo to the position of Secretary of the Hai Duong (former) Provincial Party Committee for the 2020-2025 term.
He was appointed to the position of Permanent Deputy Inspector General of the Government Inspectorate in June 2025, and subsequently assigned the role of Acting Minister of Agriculture and Environment.
At its 10th session (October 2025), the 15th National Assembly passed a resolution appointing Comrade Tran Duc Thang as Minister of Agriculture and Environment for the 2021-2026 term.
At the 14th Party Congress (January 2026), he was elected as a member of the 14th Central Committee of the Party.
On January 23, 2026, at the first meeting of the 14th Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam, he was elected to the Politburo. In March 2026, he was elected as a delegate to the 16th National Assembly.
