Dong Thanh (Yen Thanh) - a prosperous and dynamic rural area.

Dong Thanh is a mountainous commune in the northwest of Yen Thanh district, 7 km from Yen Thanh town. The total natural land area is 3,086.98 hectares. The cultivated land area is 356 hectares, planted with two rice crops per year. The population consists of 2,206 households and 8,480 people.

Dong Thanh commune was formerly a rugged, densely forested area surrounded by rocky cliffs, with streams, lakes, and dams. It was once a base for Mr. Nguyen Xuan On during the Can Vuong movement against French colonialism. In 1929, the first branch of the Indochinese Communist Party of Nghe Tinh province was established here. During the Nghe Tinh Soviet movement, on November 7, 1930, a large number of people from Dong Thanh commune participated.

On June 26, 1939, the Yen Thanh District Party Committee held a meeting at Tien Ky village communal house to establish an anti-imperialist youth group to propagate and mobilize the people to prepare in all aspects to seize power when the opportunity arose. From then on, the patriotic movement of the people of Dong Thanh commune developed steadily.

On August 22, 1945, under the leadership of the Party branch, the people rose up to seize power amidst the joyous celebrations of the nation. From then on, the people devoted their full responsibility and revolutionary enthusiasm to contributing to the building and consolidation of the government.

On September 18, 1945, the first Party cell in Dong Thanh commune was established with 9 members, led by Comrade Luong Can as Secretary. Under the leadership of the Party cell during the two wars against French colonialism and American imperialism, the people of Dong Thanh contributed 4,224 tons of rice, 162 tons of food, 867 young people joined the army, 83 Youth Volunteers, and 164 civilian workers to the front lines. The commune has 87 martyrs who bravely sacrificed their lives for the Fatherland, over 100 wounded and sick soldiers, people affected by chemical toxins, and 3 Heroic Vietnamese Mothers.

Actively pursue wealth creation.

To create jobs and increase people's income, over the years, Dong Thanh commune has intensified its propaganda and mobilization efforts, encouraging people to boldly invest in production development. This includes transforming the structure of crops and livestock, applying scientific advancements to production, focusing on economic development, and expanding the scale of household economic development.

The commune has prioritized organizing production, expanding the scale of traditional crafts, small-scale industries, aquaculture, beekeeping for honey production, rice processing, etc. In particular, the commune has encouraged people to utilize over 200 hectares of basalt land around the mountains and rocky outcrops suitable for growing citrus fruits such as oranges and pomelos.

Some households have boldly invested in growing oranges, like Mr. [Name]. Truong Van Bien invested in a large-scale, high-quality orange farm, especially one that is cared for according to VietGAP standards in an organic direction and controlled by biological pest control products, resulting in clean oranges and an annual profit of nearly 1 billion VND. Mr. Truong Van Viet's household in Dong Tro hamlet has renovated 15 hectares of hillside land, planting 10 hectares with over 6,000 orange trees, generating an annual profit of over 1.5 billion VND…

The entire commune currently has over 125 hectares of Vinh oranges, mainly delicious varieties such as Xa Doai with golden flesh and Van Du oranges… Of these, over 60 hectares have been certified with VietGAP standards. It can be affirmed that orange cultivation has helped the people of Dong Thanh commune improve their lives, with many households earning billions of dong each year.

The entire Dong Thanh commune is estimated to harvest 1,400 tons of oranges, generating an income of over 50 billion VND. Dong Thanh oranges have established their brand, participated in many trade fairs and exhibitions inside and outside the province, and have been certified as clean, safe, and high-quality oranges according to VietGAP standards.

To date, the commune has 20 economically efficient production models with high commercial value and stable product outlets. Annually, two agricultural service cooperatives and an orange cooperative have formed joint ventures and partnerships to guarantee the purchase of agricultural products from farmers on a scale of hundreds of hectares each season.

The commune has also established the Treo Vong beekeeping and commercial honey processing village, creating jobs for hundreds of local workers with an average income of 4-5 million VND/person/month. In 2023, Treo Vong honey from the village was recognized as a 3-star OCOP product by the Yen Thanh District People's Committee. In 2021, Dong Thanh oranges were recognized as a 3-star OCOP product by the Nghe An Provincial People's Committee.

With over 356 hectares of rice fields, the commune has developed a concentrated rice production area linked to consumption through a supply chain, such as the model of guaranteed product sales for rice varieties like TBR225, Khang Dan 18, VNR20, etc. The commune has promoted industrial development with industries such as the production of construction materials; the area has 3 stone quarries, 1 brick factory, 2 cooperatives, and 1 craft village, creating stable jobs for hundreds of local workers. Thanks to continuous efforts, Dong Thanh commune has undergone significant changes, with an increasing economic growth rate and an average per capita income of 62 million VND/year.

Efforts to build a commune that meets the standards of advanced new rural development.

Mr. Ngo Van Tuan, Chairman of the People's Committee of Dong Thanh commune, said: Recognizing that building a "new rural area has only a starting point, not an end point," immediately after receiving the decision recognizing the commune as meeting the new rural area standards in 2017, Dong Thanh commune continued to implement many solutions to maintain and improve the quality and effectiveness of the criteria, with the ultimate goal of achieving an advanced new rural area.

The commune has defined a specific roadmap, linking each task to be completed and the completion time for each village. Simultaneously, it has assigned specific tasks to each member, regularly monitoring the situation at the grassroots level, listening to the opinions and aspirations of the people, and making adjustments to suit the reality and promptly resolving difficulties during implementation.

Throughout the implementation process, Dong Thanh commune consistently adhered to the principle of "the people know, the people discuss, the people do, the people inspect, and the people benefit." Cadres and Party members had to take the lead and set an example; they followed the principles of democracy, openness, and transparency, thus achieving outstanding results in the model new rural development movement in Dong Thanh.

To date, Dong Thanh commune has a comprehensive system of infrastructure and cultural institutions. The rural road system has been asphalted and concreted to meet the transportation needs of the people, and the irrigation canal system and internal field roads have been upgraded and reinforced to ensure good service for production.

The school system has received basic investment, the health station has been upgraded, providing good medical services. The public address system is functioning effectively to serve the daily needs of the people. Free Wi-Fi has been installed to serve the community; 9 out of 9 hamlets have been recognized as Cultural Villages, with Dong Hoa Village being recognized as a typical Cultural Village at the provincial level.

Today, Dong Thanh commune is donning a "new look," its flourishing model of a new rural area clearly demonstrating its continuous development, thanks to the efforts of the local Party committee, government, and people working together to build an increasingly prosperous, beautiful, and civilized homeland.
