The SEA Games 33 women's football final between the Vietnam women's team and the Philippines women's team on the evening of December 17th at Chonburi Stadium ended with great disappointment for Coach Mai Duc Chung's team. After 120 minutes without a goal and a tense penalty shootout, the Vietnam women's team accepted defeat to the Philippines, thus missing out on the gold medal.

Both teams deserved to reach the final after a challenging journey at the 33rd SEA Games. The Vietnamese women's team showcased their class and experience, while the Philippines impressed with their physique, stamina, and powerful playing style. Before the match, it was seen as a balanced clash between technique and strength, between tradition and the strong resurgence of Philippine women's football.

Despite having lost all three of their most recent encounters to the Philippines, the Vietnamese women's national team entered the match confidently. Coach Mai Duc Chung's players proactively organized their play, fiercely contested in the midfield, and did not hesitate to push their formation forward. From the start of the match, the pace was high. The Philippines mainly relied on set pieces, while Vietnam patiently coordinated their play, looking for space with attacks down the flanks.

In the 10th minute, Thanh Nha crossed the ball for Van Su to head it, but he couldn't make contact due to his physical disadvantage. The Philippines also had a dangerous situation in the 23rd minute when Carpio crossed to Ramirez, but the Vietnamese defense managed to clear the ball in time.

The turning point of the match came in the 29th minute. From a cross from the right wing by Van Su, Bich Thuy headed the ball into the net against the Philippines. However, the linesman unexpectedly raised the flag for offside, much to the surprise of the Vietnamese players. Slow-motion replays showed this decision was baffling, as Bich Thuy was not in an offside position at all. The referee's decision unfortunately resulted in the Vietnamese women's team being denied a goal.

Not only that incident, but the refereeing team also repeatedly frustrated the Vietnamese players. Clear fouls by the Philippines players against Van Su and Bich Thuy went unpunished, while the Vietnamese side received rather harsh yellow cards. The first half ended 0-0, much to the frustration of the Vietnamese players.

In the second half, the Vietnamese women's team continued to push forward in search of a goal. Goalkeeper Kim Thanh played brilliantly, making a crucial save to deny Ramirez's dangerous run, although she later needed medical attention. Despite creating constant pressure, opportunities from Hai Yen and direct free kicks could not be converted into goals.

The 90 minutes of regulation time passed without a goal being scored, forcing the two teams into extra time. At this point, physical fitness began to become an issue for the Vietnamese women's team, while the Philippines showed a clear advantage in endurance. The match remained closely contested before being decided on penalties.

In the penalty shootout, Huynh Nhu, Hoang Thi Loan, Truc Huong, and Ngoc Minh Chuyen all successfully converted their shots. However, in the decisive penalty kick, Tran Thi Thu failed to beat the Philippine goalkeeper, resulting in a bitter defeat for the Vietnamese women's national team.

Losing on penalties after a final match overshadowed by controversial decisions, the Vietnamese women's national team missed out on the gold medal at the 33rd SEA Games. Nevertheless, the fighting spirit of Huỳnh Như and her teammates deserves appreciation.
