Samsung has reportedly decided to completely halt the Galaxy S26 Edge development project, a move that suggests the company may be withdrawing from the ultra-thin smartphone segment. This decision comes amid growing consumer interest in slim and lightweight designs that come at the cost of several key features.
Initially, there were reports that Samsung was considering replacing the Galaxy S26+ with an S26 Edge version in 2026. However, this plan quickly went into a waiting state for market feedback, and according to the latest sources, the project has now been completely canceled.
The disproportionate trade-offs of ultra-thin design.
Although the Galaxy S25 Edge impresses with its extremely thin body, this design also comes with several significant limitations. One of the biggest criticisms is the modest 3,900 mAh battery capacity, which is insufficient to meet the daily usage needs of most users.
Furthermore, photography capabilities are also affected. To maintain its slim profile, the Galaxy S25 Edge had to omit the telephoto lens, a crucial feature on high-end devices. Similarly, its competitor, the iPhone Air, is only equipped with a single rear camera. These facts show that modern users tend to prioritize devices with versatile camera systems, long battery life, and efficient heat dissipation rather than an overly thin and light design.
Signals from the market and competitors
Samsung's decision may also be influenced by moves from competitors. According to a report in October, Apple cut iPhone Air production by one million units. With its biggest rival no longer interested in this segment, Samsung seems to have no reason to continue investing in a niche product line with limited demand.
Although there have been reports that Samsung is considering equipping the next generation Edge with a larger battery, this may not be enough to change consumer opinions. Instead, Samsung is expected to focus its resources on developing flagship models that strike a better balance between design, performance, and battery life in the near future.
