The Khe Lai - Vuc Mau Reservoir Project has been officially completed.
Nearly 17 years after its commencement, the Khe Lai - Vuc Mau Reservoir Project in Tan Thang commune, Quynh Luu district, has been officially completed and is preparing to go into operation. This is a large-scale irrigation project, providing water for irrigation and daily life for people in northern Nghe An province.
The Khe Lai - Vuc Mau Reservoir Project was approved in June 2009 and commenced construction in 2010 with an initial total investment of over 227.8 billion VND.
However, due to numerous difficulties, especially regarding funding, the project has been suspended since 2017.
It wasn't until 2021, when the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development issued Decision No. 4228/QD-BNN approving the adjustment of phase 1 of the project with a total investment of up to 627 billion VND, that the project was restarted. Of this, construction costs accounted for approximately 198 billion VND, and nearly 373 billion VND was allocated to compensation and land clearance.
To date, all important components such as the main dam, auxiliary dam, spillway, water intake culvert, and a canal system over 8 km long connecting from the Khe Lai - Vuc Mau reservoir have been completed.
According to Mr. Vu Quy Phat, Director of the Project Management Board for Investment, Construction of Works and Rural Development in Nghe An province, the project has been completed and is currently undergoing technical inspection to ensure safety before being officially handed over to Bac Irrigation Company Limited in May 2025. It is expected that the Khe Lai - Vuc Mau reservoir will begin accumulating water during this year's flood season and will be operational within the same year.
Once operational, the Khe Lai - Vuc Mau reservoir will provide efficient irrigation for 3,431 hectares of cultivated land and supply drinking water to nearly 40,000 people in Hoang Mai town and Quynh Luu district. In addition, the reservoir will also provide approximately 6.8 million cubic meters of water annually to industrial zones and create a water source for 400 hectares of aquaculture.
