Despite the wife's earnest plea for a reduced sentence for her husband who poisoned their two children with pesticides, the appellate court upheld the death sentence.

The High People's Court in Hanoi today brought Nguyen Van Duy (born 1985, in Thanh Oai district) to the appeal trial for murder. Duy killed two children who called him father.

The trial was held to consider the defendant’s appeal for a reduced sentence. The mother of the two unfortunate children, Ms. Nguyen Thi Hien (born 1989), filed an appeal for a reduced sentence for her husband.

Defendant Nguyen Van Duy.

In the appeal, Ms. Hien wrote: "I earnestly and respectfully ask the appellate court to consider giving the defendant Nguyen Van Duy the most lenient sentence, so that he has a chance to live and consider that all I can do to repent to myself and my family."

According to the first instance verdict, in 2008, Duy married Ms. Hien but had no children for many years. After treatment, Ms. Hien gave birth to two children, a boy and a girl.

In April 2018, Duy suspected his wife of having an affair with another man. He suspected that the two children his wife gave birth to were not his.

Duy repeatedly questioned his wife about this but Ms. Hien did not admit it. The couple often argued and fought.

Due to the anger of being beaten, Ms. Hien returned to her mother's house. During this time, she contacted her husband many times by text message and phone call to inform him that she was going to divorce.

As for Duy, after pent-up suspicions and rumors about his two children not looking like him, he took hair samples from his children to have them tested. The results showed that the defendant was not the biological father of the two children.

In desperation, Duy decided to kill his two children to make his wife regret it. At about 12:30 on May 18, 2018, the defendant bought pesticide and stored it in the kitchen.

The next morning, he wrote a suicide note and then went to the nursery to pick up his two children and bring them home.

Duy mixed pesticide into soft drinks and gave it to his children to drink. The defendant, on his part, mixed pesticide into soft drinks and drank them, then went to bed next to his children.

At around 11am that same day, Duy felt unwell and vomited. He thought that vomiting would not kill him, so he went to the third floor and jumped to his death.

Being taken to the emergency room in time by everyone, Duy did not die, but the two children died from pesticide poisoning.

Considering it necessary to remove the defendant from social life, the appellate court decided to uphold the death sentence for Nguyen Van Duy.
