According to the latest test results, samples of disposable chopsticks in Vietnam did not detect bleach.

According to Mr. Nguyen Thanh Phong, Director of the Food Safety Department, Ministry of Health, upon receiving information from Taiwan about 4 samples (out of 250 chopstick samples) containing toxic residues. In addition to contacting Taiwan to verify the information, the Food Safety Department also directed the National Institute for Food Safety Control to collect samples of disposable chopsticks on the market for testing. On January 11, the test results showed that 10 samples of chopsticks collected on the market were all negative for bleach.

Also on the afternoon of January 11, the Food Safety Department received feedback from Taiwan regarding 4 batches of disposable chopsticks exported from Vietnam to Taiwan containing biphenyl (0.22ppm) and hydrogen peroxide as announced by Taiwan. Accordingly, Taiwan has only provided the names of 4 companies in Taiwan that imported the above chopsticks, including: WeiTing, Jiang Tai, Ma Er Si and GuangMing, and there is no specific information about the Vietnamese chopstick manufacturing companies.

To clarify the issue further, Mr. Thanh Phong said that the Department has continued to send a dispatch requesting the Taiwan Food and Drug Administration to provide detailed names and addresses of Vietnamese companies exporting disposable chopsticks to Taiwan. Thereby, there will be a basis for conducting inspections, verifying information, and handling violations (if any).
