Disposable chopsticks in Vietnam test negative for bleach.

According to the latest test results, samples of disposable chopsticks in Vietnam did not contain any detectable bleaching agents.

According to Mr. Nguyen Thanh Phong, Director of the Food Safety Department, Ministry of Health, upon receiving information from Taiwan regarding 4 samples (out of 250 samples of chopsticks) containing harmful residues, the Food Safety Department contacted Taiwan to verify the information and instructed the National Institute of Food Safety and Hygiene Testing to collect samples of disposable chopsticks from the market for testing. On January 11th, the test results showed that all 10 samples of chopsticks taken from the market tested negative for bleaching agents.

Also on the afternoon of January 11th, the Food Safety Department received feedback from Taiwan regarding four batches of disposable chopsticks exported from Vietnam to Taiwan that contained biphenyl (0.22 ppm) and hydrogen peroxide, as reported by Taiwan. According to the information provided, Taiwan has only listed the names of four Taiwanese companies that imported the chopsticks: WeiTing, Jiang Tai, Ma Er Si, and GuangMing, and has not yet provided specific information about the Vietnamese companies that manufactured the chopsticks.

To further clarify the issue, Mr. Thanh Phong stated that the Department has continued to send official letters requesting the Taiwan Food and Drug Administration to provide detailed names and addresses of Vietnamese companies exporting disposable chopsticks to Taiwan. This is to provide a basis for conducting inspections, verifying information, and handling violations (if any).
