Bidding farewell to Associate Professor Van Nhu Cuong as he is laid to rest.

The memorial service and funeral for Associate Professor Van Nhu Cuong took place at the Ministry of National Defense's funeral home.

This morning (October 12th), at the Ministry of National Defense funeral home, No. 5 Tran Thanh Tong Street, Hanoi, a memorial service and funeral ceremony were held for Associate Professor and educator Van Nhu Cuong as he was laid to rest.

At the time, Associate Professor Van Nhu Cuong once confided: "My father said that I would cry when I stepped onto the podium for the first time, and that I would be happier if I could spend my last moments with my beloved students."

Ms. Van Thuy Duong, daughter of Associate Professor Van Nhu Cuong, said that Professor Cuong's last wish was to have his remains brought back to visit the school one last time to say goodbye to his students. Therefore, after the memorial service and funeral ceremony held at the Ministry of National Defense funeral home (from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM), from 1:30 PM to 2:30 PM on October 12th, the family will take Associate Professor Van Nhu Cuong's remains to campus A (Nam Trung Yen) and campus 1 (Tan Trieu) of Luong The Vinh School. Afterwards, the convoy will travel to Van Dien Cemetery for burial procedures.

Associate Professor Van Nhu Cuong was born in 1937 in Quynh Doi village, Quynh Luu district, Nghe An province. He studied mathematics as a postgraduate student at the Institute of Mathematics, Academy of Sciences of the former Soviet Union, and successfully defended his doctoral dissertation in 1971.

After returning to Vietnam, he worked as a lecturer in the Geometry department at Hanoi Pedagogical University and Vinh Pedagogical University.

Professor Van Nhu Cuong was a member of the National Education Council of Vietnam. He was recognized by the Government with the title of Associate Professor and made many contributions to the country's education system.

Associate Professor Van Nhu Cuong also edited and directly compiled more than 60 textbooks, reference books for general education, and university textbooks on geometry. He is the author of the Vietnamese high school geometry textbook series (advanced program).

Mr. Van Nhu Cuong founded Luong The Vinh High School in 1989, the first private high school in Vietnam since the country's reform period. After 25 years as principal, he recently assumed the position of Chairman of the school's Board of Directors. He is known for his outspokenness and has repeatedly spoken out to point out the shortcomings of the education system.

Associate Professor Van Nhu Cuong has been battling cancer for three years. He was hospitalized for treatment in March 2017. During that time, his family and relatives devotedly cared for him and stayed by his side. To ensure he could focus on his recovery, the doctors restricted visits.

At approximately 1:00 AM on October 9th, Associate Professor Van Nhu Cuong passed away at the age of 80 after a period of battling illness.

Before his death, Associate Professor Van Nhu Cuong always instructed his wife, children, and grandchildren that his greatest wish after his passing was to avoid a lavish funeral and to use the money received as condolences to build a school for children in mountainous areas. The school he envisioned building will be named Na Ngao Kindergarten in Dong Tam commune (Bac Quang district, Ha Giang province). The remaining funds will be put into the school's Charity Fund to continue supporting those less fortunate.

Previously, in 2014, Associate Professor Van Nhu Cuong established the school's Charity Fund, which has carried out many meaningful activities to support students in mountainous regions.

The passing of Associate Professor Van Nhu Cuong has left a deep sense of loss not only among generations of students and teachers but also among all those concerned with the cause of education. Throughout his life, Associate Professor Van Nhu Cuong dedicated himself to the development of the education sector. He was known not only for his groundbreaking and insightful thinking that contributed to the development of national education but also as an exemplary teacher.
