German scientists have launched Synlight, the world's largest artificial sun, at the Institute for Solar Research, the International Business Times reports. The experiment aims to explore the potential of this clean, renewable energy source. In particular, scientists hope to test processes for producing solar fuels such as hydrogen.

Synlight has 149 high-energy lamps capable of emitting solar radiation. The radiation from the lamps can be concentrated in an area of 20x20 cm. If the lamps are switched on at 350 kW, they will generate approximately 10,000 times more energy than the solar radiation reaching Earth. Temperatures can reach up to 3,000 degrees Celsius.

Johannes Remmel, director of the North Rhine-Westphalia State Environment Agency, initiated the project. According to him, to meet renewable energy targets and expand these sources, the government must rely on current technology. However, investing in advanced and modern technologies like Synlight is essential for future energy production.

Hydrogen is a promising fuel for the future due to its ability to burn without releasing carbon dioxide. To produce hydrogen, scientists need to find a way to split water into hydrogen and oxygen. The research team hopes the artificial sun will help them produce solar fuel on a commercial scale.

Synlight was created after nearly two years of development at a cost of approximately $3.8 million. Like solar fuel, the artificial sun can be used for both space research and industry.
