Germany fears a wave of refugees if it stops aid to Ukraine.
Stopping aid to Ukraine could trigger a wave of asylum applications in Germany.
According to RIA Novosti on September 15, the Tagesspiegel newspaper quoted Anton Hofreiter, Vice President of Germany's Green Party, as saying that if aid to Ukraine is stopped, a large number of refugees are expected to arrive in EU countries.
Anton Hofreiter expressed his view: "If we continue to withhold aid from Ukraine, we will have to receive hundreds of thousands of refugees."
The MEP also called on German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk to pursue a coordinated migration policy, as individual actions in this situation could be “the beginning of the end” for the EU.
Meanwhile, the German publication Bild reported that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky plans to travel to the United States to personally ask US President Joe Biden to lift the ban allowing Western long-range weapons to penetrate deep into Russian territory.
"Mr. Zelensky will travel to the United States in the coming weeks and present his strategy there to both US President Joe Biden and presidential candidates Kamala Harris and Donald Trump," Bild reported.
Earlier, on September 13, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz reaffirmed Berlin's position that it would not send long-range missiles to Ukraine, despite some Western countries easing restrictions on Kyiv's use of this type of weapon.
Since the outbreak of hostilities in Ukraine, Germany has been the second-largest provider of military aid to Kyiv, after the United States. However, Berlin has consistently refused to supply Ukraine with its domestically produced Taurus long-range missiles, fearing it would escalate tensions.
