Classified as dangerous, petrol and diesel cars could be banned from sale in Europe from 2030.

The German Senate has passed a resolution to ban internal combustion engines and submitted a proposal to the European Commission to impose a ban across the continent, according to Spiegel magazine.

Diesel and petrol cars could be banned from sale in Europe from 2030.

The resolution asks the European Commission to "review current tax laws and take into account incentives for zero-emission mobility", including encouraging customers to buy electric cars.

The German Senate’s move also means asking the European Commission to eliminate the tax advantage currently applied to diesel cars, according to Forbes. If implemented, the cost of these models could increase, meaning customers are no longer interested in diesel cars and manufacturers are no longer willing to invest in production.

Fuel-guzzling machines with superior power may gradually disappear in Europe if the ban is enacted.

The resolution’s clear aim is to ban the sale of internal combustion engine cars (petrol and diesel) by 2030, so cars sold before then will still be allowed to operate. And crucially, until then, the fuel-guzzling machines will still be free to roam Germany’s Autobahn.
