Using 'dating apps' to scam 200 billion VND.
On February 5th, the Cao Bang Provincial Police transferred 68 individuals involved in a transnational fraud ring that exploited "relationship apps" and social media to the Criminal Investigation Department of the Cao Bang Provincial Police for investigation, verification, and legal processing.
Previously, on January 31st, the Cao Bang Provincial Police, in coordination with the Criminal Police Department (Ministry of Public Security) and the Tay Ninh Provincial Police, established a task force to travel to the Kingdom of Cambodia. They collaborated with the Vietnamese Ministry of Public Security's representative office in Cambodia and the Royal Cambodian Police to conduct simultaneous inspections at the V2 building in the Hoang Nam area, Bavet city, Svay Rieng province (Kingdom of Cambodia).
During the inspection, authorities discovered many Vietnamese citizens working at "companies" suspected of fraud and embezzlement led by Chinese nationals; they seized 87 computers of various types, 85 mobile phones, and numerous documents and electronic data related to the criminal activity.
Through investigation, the Cao Bang Provincial Police determined that the suspects used social media and "dating apps" to get acquainted with and build romantic relationships with victims, then lured them into investing in fake gambling and financial websites created by the suspects to embezzle their assets. Many victims were defrauded of tens of billions of VND, with the initial estimated total amount embezzled being around 200 billion VND.
Recognizing this as a transnational criminal network operating in Cambodia, with victims in numerous locations across the country and abroad, the Cao Bang Provincial Police established a special task force, concentrating resources and coordinating closely with relevant agencies both domestically and internationally to successfully combat and dismantle it.
The case is currently being investigated and expanded by the Cao Bang Provincial Police Investigation Agency to clarify the roles of each individual involved and to strictly handle the matter according to the law.
