Fabricating a kidnapping story to extort money from his common-law wife.
On February 15th, the Vung Tau City Police are continuing to work with Nguyen Hoang Viet (born in 1980, residing in Thoi Lai District, Can Tho City; current address: Ward 5, Vung Tau City, Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province) to verify his alleged appropriation of property from Ms. Tran TN (born in 1982, currently living with Viet as husband and wife).
According to initial information, Nguyen Hoang Viet worked as a motorbike taxi driver in Ward 5, Vung Tau City. Due to needing money to pay off debts and for personal expenses, Viet conceived the idea of fabricating a kidnapping story to extort money from his common-law wife (Ms. Tran TN).
At noon on February 14th, Viet drove HQT (born in 2006, residing in Thoi Lai district, Can Tho city) from Vung Tau city to Long Khanh district, Dong Nai province. There, Viet drove into a rubber plantation area and called Ms. N., crying and saying he had been tied up and beaten, demanding 60 million VND for his release.
Fearing for Viet's safety, Ms. N transferred 20 million VND to the account provided by Viet and reported the incident to the police.
The Criminal Police Department of the Provincial Police, the Vung Tau City Police, in coordination with the Criminal Police Department - Ministry of Public Security, the Cyber Security and High-Tech Crime Prevention Department of the Ba Ria-Vung Tau Provincial Police, and the Dong Nai Provincial Police, quickly deployed forces to verify and clarify the matter.
Through the coordinated application of investigative measures, at approximately 1:40 AM on February 15th, the task force inspected the house of suspect HQT (born in 1984) in Long Khanh district, Dong Nai province, and discovered Nguyen Hoang Viet sleeping inside HQT's house, with no signs of being tied up or beaten. The task force then invited the relevant individuals to the Vung Tau City Police Station for further investigation.
Working with the police, Nguyen Hoang Viet initially confessed to his wrongdoing and stated that he was currently in debt of 38 million VND, so he fabricated the kidnapping story to extort 60 million VND from Ms. Tran TN.
Furthermore, Nguyen Hoang Viet also confessed that during this period he knew another woman named X. Besides the 38 million VND used to pay off debts, Viet intended to keep the remaining money for personal expenses and to pay rent for his girlfriend, X. The case is currently under further investigation.
