The Hoan Kiem District Police in Hanoi are currently detaining Hoang Thi Sang (42 years old, from Thai Nguyen) for investigation into the crime of fraud and appropriation of property, and are also searching for her accomplices.
Sang admitted that she and four other women from her hometown sliced thin, dried wood to make fake "miracle cures" to sell to cancer patients. On March 13, Sang's group went to K Hospital to offer the "miracle cure" to many people, quoting a price of 26 million VND.
When a woman showed interest, the group would approach her, introduce her to Sang, and she would boast at length about Sang's ability to "cure all diseases." The woman would give Sang 6.2 million dong upfront and arrange to pay the rest later that day.
He was caught by the police that morning while receiving more money from the victim's family.
The investigating agency is urging anyone who has been a victim of Sang to report to the police.
