The US magazine Atlantico commented: The deployment of the S-400 is a symbolic response to the presence of NATO troops in Poland and the Baltic countries.
The NATO troops were deployed out of concern about Moscow's potential military intervention in the region, but the Kremlin, paradoxically, sees the same troops as a threat in this part of Europe, where Russia's position has weakened somewhat since the Cold War.
In other words, each side feared that the other was witnessing a military incursion, although in reality neither side probably wanted military conflict.
The decision to deploy the S-400 near Moscow rather than on the outskirts of Saint Petersburg means that no NATO aircraft will be able to penetrate Russian territory, let alone reach the capital.
In addition, by choosing to deploy the S-400, the most modern multi-purpose missile system owned by the Russian Ministry of Defense, Russian President Vladimir Putin wants to show that Russia is still a world power, capable of competing militarily with European powers and the United States.
