The "verbal sparring" between the two sides was sparked on Twitter on July 29 when Edward Snowden, a former employee of the US National Security Agency (NSA), criticized WikiLeaks for failing to provide only "modest documents."
Wikileaks – which had helped Snowden find safe asylum in Russia – immediately responded by implying that Edward Snowden was trying to improve his relationship with Washington.
Calling WikiLeaks' role the "democratization" of information, the former US security employee argued that the documents, when released, should not harm anyone – even though Snowden had previously revealed many classified NSA documents.
Snowden's comments on Twitter came just days after WikiLeaks revealed several voicemails from high-ranking officials and some internal correspondence from the Democratic National Committee. This information was leaked following a hacking incident that breached the Democratic Party's information systems.
WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has also promised to release more information from within the Democratic Party.
In response, WikiLeaks said that Snowden's criticisms could be a ploy to "gain forgiveness" from Republican presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.
Snowden is currently living in exile in Russia.
