EU asks UK to start Brexit negotiations soon

(Baonghean.vn) - On September 8, the head of the European Union - Donald Tusk urged the UK to urgently start the Brexit negotiation round to officially leave the common European roof.

The statement by Mr. Tusk, President of the Council of the European Union (EU), was made at the time he was meeting with British Prime Minister - Theresa May in London. Here, the two leaders will discuss the consequences of the Brexit vote that took place in June 2016.

Before the meeting, Mr Tusk told Mrs May that it was time to start negotiations on Britain's exit from the EU, in accordance with Article 50 of the Charter of the Union. Mr Tusk also stressed that these negotiations should start "as soon as possible."

The British prime minister has signaled that she will not rush into formal negotiations with the 27 EU members on the terms of Britain's exit from the bloc. Under EU rules, the negotiations will last two years.

On September 7, Mrs. May also said her government would "think soberly and carefully" about the issues and "will not make a final decision until the UK is truly ready."
