Mr. Tusk, President of the European Union Council, made the statement while he was meeting with British Prime Minister Theresa May in London. There, the two leaders were scheduled to discuss the consequences of the Brexit vote in June 2016.
Prior to the meeting, Mr. Tusk told Mrs. May that it was time to begin negotiations on Britain's departure from the EU, in accordance with Article 50 of the Charter of the Union. Mr. Tusk also stressed that these negotiations should begin "as soon as possible."
Earlier, the British Prime Minister had signaled that she would not rush to begin formal negotiations with the 27 EU members on the terms of Britain's exit from the Union. According to European Union regulations, these negotiations would last for two years.
On September 7th, May also stated that her government would "think calmly and carefully" about the issues and "will not make any final decisions until Britain is truly ready."
