The EU supports Ukraine for its own benefit.
(Baonghean.vn) - The head of foreign policy of the European Union, Josep Borrell, said in an interview with CNN (USA) on March 25 that the EU supports Ukraine because Kyiv serves the interests of Brussels.
"We support Ukraine not just because we love the Ukrainian people. It's in our interest. And it's also in the interest of the United States, as a participant in global affairs," said the European Union's (EU) foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell.
According to The Guardian, a survey conducted in January 2024 in 12 EU member states, including France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain, and Sweden, yielded unfavorable results. In Europe, only 10% of respondents believed that Ukraine would win on the battlefield, while this figure rose to 20% for Russia.
When asked whether Europe should continue to help Ukraine, the percentages in Sweden, Portugal, and Poland agreed, with 50% agreeing and 48% agreeing.
Meanwhile, 64% of respondents from Hungary, 59% from Greece, 52% from Italy, and 49% from Austria believe that Ukraine should quickly accept a settlement agreement, such as sitting down at the negotiating table.
Europe has never abandoned its commitment to supporting Ukraine, but the context of the conflict is forcing lawmakers to seek a less costly alternative to continued military confrontation with Russia.
Ukraine's counteroffensive stalled amid concerns that its leading aid donor, the United States, would likely welcome back Donald Trump to the White House – a staunch "America First" leader who is not enthusiastic about NATO conflicts.
On the Russian side, the Kremlin has repeatedly stated that supplying weapons from the West to Kyiv would cause the Russia-Ukraine negotiations to fail and have a negative impact.
