The EU supports Ukraine for its own benefit
(Baonghean.vn) - European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said in an interview with CNN (USA) on March 25 that the EU supports Ukraine because Kiev meets Brussels' interests.
"We support Ukraine not only because we love the Ukrainian people. It is in our interest. And it is also in the interest of the United States, as a player in global affairs," said the head of foreign policy of the European Union (EU) Josep Borrell.
According to The Guardian, a January 2024 survey in 12 EU member states, including France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain and Sweden, showed less optimistic results. In Europe, only 10% of survey participants believed that Ukraine would win on the battlefield, while the figure was 20% for Russia.
When asked whether Europe should continue to help Ukraine, the approval ratings were 50% in Sweden, 48% in Portugal and 47% in Poland.
Meanwhile, 64% of respondents from Hungary, 59% from Greece, 52% from Italy and 49% from Austria said that Ukraine should quickly accept a settlement agreement, such as sitting at the negotiating table.
Europe has never abandoned its commitment to support Ukraine, but the conflict is forcing lawmakers to find a less costly alternative than continuing military confrontation with Russia.
