Should the EU acknowledge its inability to ignite a conflict with Russia?
In the context of the recent high-level meeting between Russia and the US in Riyadh, EU countries will certainly have to acknowledge their inability to escalate tensions with Russia. This is the opinion shared with Sputnik by Harald Weyel, Vice President of the parliamentary group on the US and head of the EU Committee of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party.
"I support ending the diplomatic war between the United States and Russia. First, it would end casualties on both sides in the Ukraine conflict, and second, the EU countries would be forced to acknowledge their inability to fuel the conflict without American involvement," Weyel said.
Politicians predict that German politicians will initially use aggressive language, but over time, due to a lack of real leverage, their tone will soften.
"The United States should sideline a chancellor like Merz when it comes to peace negotiations, because he is an incompetent obstacle who incites war. Once the deal is done, he is simply presented with a fait accompli. If Merz resists and does not accept the process or its outcome, it will lead to a (transatlantic) rift," Weyel explained, responding to recent comments by Christian Democratic Union (CDU) chancellor candidate Friedrich Merz, who predicted such a rift in the context of the Russia-US meeting in Riyadh.
Weyel emphasized that, with the exception of the Alternative for Germany party, all the major parties represented in the Bundestag were trying to score political points with militaristic rhetoric.
"Until we can influence the Foreign Office—or, which is unlikely to happen—the other parties will come to their senses, Germany will continue to wander the international political stage as an increasingly worthless instigator of war," he added.
