The attacker, Ali Sonboly, an 18-year-old German of Iranian descent, was shot dead after opening fire on passersby on a street near a McDonald's restaurant in Munich, before fleeing into the nearby Olympia shopping center.
Nine people were shot dead, including children and teenagers. Twenty people were injured, three in critical condition.
European Commission spokeswoman Margaritis Schinas said the continent would “defend itself against attacks following the killings.”
He said: "The doors of Europe are opening for those fleeing war and seeking asylum here, but we will defend ourselves against attacks against our way of life."
"We will tighten border controls, making it more difficult to acquire weapons. In addition, we will strengthen cooperation between security and intelligence services."
These comments came after a police chief said that the attacks occurring in Germany were not related to the refugee issue.
In fact, German Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere stated that the parents of many of the murderers were refugees who moved to Germany in the 1990s.
Mr. de Maiziere argued that Germany needs stricter gun laws following recent incidents. He said, "We have to assess the situation very carefully, and changes to the law are necessary."
