On March 28th, many Vietnamese applications running on the Facebook and Messenger platforms unexpectedly experienced login suspensions or were prevented from registering new users.

Specifically, logging into websites that previously allowed users to register using their Facebook accounts has been temporarily suspended; chatbox applications on Messenger are no longer allowing new user registrations. In particular, third-party applications running on the Facebook platform that use APIs to collect user information (with user consent) must cease operation.

According to our research, this situation is occurring in many other places around the world, and its scope may be global, not just limited to Vietnam.

The incident occurred because Facebook is currently re-evaluating its APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) that could potentially lead to the leakage of Facebook users' information.

Previously, in an email sent to the community of service providers developing on the Facebook platform, including Messenger, on March 27, Facebook stated that it had begun implementing changes to the platform in an effort to "maintain people's trust in Facebook, as Mark Zuckerberg committed in his post earlier this week."

Specifically, Facebook is requiring its partners to stop introducing new applications or experiences on the Facebook and Messenger platforms until the social network completes new changes to its platform operations and adds stricter policies and terms in the future.

"These are important steps to prevent past misuse of user data, to provide stronger protections against future misuse, and to give users more control over their data," Facebook said in a statement.
