However, Meta emphasized that the company would create new, stricter rules for Trump's account to prevent repeat offenses. Previously, Trump's Facebook and Instagram accounts were blocked on charges of inciting riots at the US Capitol in 2021.

On January 25, Meta announced that after determining there was no longer a serious risk to public safety, the company could reopen Trump's accounts, but with a few caveats.

“We will restore Mr. Trump’s Facebook and Instagram accounts in the coming weeks. However, we will also implement new safeguards to prevent repeat offenses,” Meta emphasized, adding that if Mr. Trump violates the rules, he could face harsher penalties.

According to Meta's new policy, if Mr. Trump continues to violate content rules, his account will be suspended for one month to two years.

According to NBC, Trump recently filed a request asking Meta to help restore his account, weeks after announcing his plan to run for president again in 2024. His campaign team argued that the Facebook ban had “significantly distorted and suppressed the public,” and requested a meeting to discuss the issue.

Although it's unclear whether that meeting actually took place, in its statement announcing the end of the account freeze on Trump, Meta acknowledged that it did not want to hinder open, public, and democratic debate.

During his 2016 presidential campaign, candidate Donald Trump used numerous social media platforms to campaign and win. After his election, he continued to use his personal Twitter account to make official announcements. Although his Twitter account was suspended following the Capitol riots, it was reopened in November 2022 after billionaire Elon Musk took over the company. While the former president has not yet posted anything on his newly restored Twitter account, a source close to him told NBC that his campaign advisors are now brainstorming content for his return to the platform.
