"Congratulations to Vietnam. This is the first time this team has qualified for the U20 World Cup," the congratulatory message read, accompanied by an image of the Vietnamese flag.
In the quarter-final match of the U19 Asian Championship on the evening of October 23rd, Vietnam defeated host nation Bahrain with a score of 1-0. The only goal of the match was scored by Tran Thanh, a striker who made his first appearance in the starting lineup by coach Hoang Anh Tuan in this year's tournament.
Vietnam's qualification for the semi-finals of the U19 Asian Championship, thereby securing a ticket to the 2017 U20 World Cup, can be considered a major surprise. Before the tournament in Bahrain began, the team was not highly regarded, having been eliminated in the group stage in all six previous appearances, failing to even secure a single victory.
Before defeating Bahrain in the quarterfinals, Coach Hoang Anh Tuan's team also beat North Korea 2-1, drew with UAE 1-1, and held Iraq to a 0-0 draw to secure second place in Group B. All three of Vietnam's opponents in the aforementioned group stage had won the Asian Youth Championship at least once.
In the semi-finals, which will take place on October 27th, Vietnam will face the winner of the match between Japan and Tajikistan.
