2026 Ford Mustang Mach-E: Front cargo area becomes an optional extra for $495.
Previously standard equipment since 2021, the front luggage compartment (frunk) on the 2026 Ford Mustang Mach-E will become an optional extra costing approximately 12.6 million VND.
The 2026 Ford Mustang Mach-E marks a major shift in its equipment strategy by making the front cargo area (frunk) a standard feature and an optional extra. This decision reflects a trend toward optimizing production costs and adapting to the practical habits of current electric vehicle users, a move that has sparked mixed opinions.
Change from standard equipment to a paid option.
Since its launch in 2021, the front cargo area (frunk) has always been an integral part of the Ford Mustang Mach-E. However, for the 2026 model year, Ford has officially added this feature as an option, priced at $495 (approximately 12.6 million VND).

A representative from the American automaker stated that, based on surveys, many customers do not fully utilize this storage space. Converting it to an optional feature helps the company reduce production costs without significantly impacting the experience of the majority of users. Notably, if customers do not pay extra for this option, the space under the hood will remain empty and unusable for storage.
Changes in functionality and capacity across generations.
When it was first launched, Ford heavily promoted the frunk as a significant advantage of the Mach-E over other internal combustion engine vehicles. This cargo area initially had a capacity of up to 141 liters, incorporating a convenient drain hole, making it suitable for carrying carry-on luggage or as a cooler for ice and cold drinks.
By the 2024 upgrade, the frunk capacity had been reduced by about half to make room for a new heat pump system that optimizes operating efficiency. Despite the reduced space, it still has enough room for small travel bags or personal items. The decision to "lock" this space behind a wall in the 2026 version has led many experts to question its feasibility, given that customers are paying for space that was already available on the electric vehicle platform.
Market context and competitor strategies
Ford isn't the only manufacturer to adopt this policy. The all-electric Dodge Charger Daytona also offers a 141-liter front cargo area as an option in its R/T package, which costs up to $5,000 (approximately 127 million VND). Compared to that, Ford's pricing is considered more accessible.
Meanwhile, the global electric vehicle market is divided into two distinct extremes:
- The group maintains standard frunk:The Tesla Model 3 and Model Y continue to lead in sales with their convenient front cargo area.
- Frunk removal group:The Volkswagen ID.4 and Chevrolet Equinox EV completely lack this compartment but still achieve good sales results.
In reality, front cargo space isn't usually a key factor in consumer purchasing decisions, especially when many models have such limited space. However, Ford's conversion of a previously free feature into a paid service shows a growing trend towards increasing additional revenue streams for manufacturers, a move that often makes consumers uncomfortable.
