The Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) has just dismantled a smuggling ring that was bringing improvised explosive devices from Poland, disguised as thermal shoe insoles, intended to attack soldiers.

The Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) announced it had successfully thwarted a plot by Ukrainian intelligence to attack Russian soldiers with cleverly disguised improvised explosive devices (IEDs). A foreign national was arrested in Moscow after receiving a package containing hundreds of bomb-laden shoe insoles sent via a shipping company.

Sophisticated camouflage technology and detonation mechanism.

According to a report from the FSB, the seized shipment contained a total of 504 improvised explosive devices. These devices were disguised as ordinary heated shoe insoles. The unique feature lies in the detonation mechanism: the explosive component is designed to ignite as soon as the user connects the insole's heating system to a power source.

Technically, each device has an explosive force equivalent to 1.5 grams of TNT. Although the amount of explosive is not large, the main purpose of this weapon is to inflict serious injury, specifically to blow off a soldier's limb while they are performing combat duties.

Smuggling routes and related conspiracies

Investigations revealed that the shipment had been smuggled into Russia from Poland via Belarusian territory. According to the alleged plan by the Ukrainian side, the shoe insoles were to be sent to Russian military units on the front lines under the guise of humanitarian aid.

In addition, the FSB also thwarted another attempt by enemy intelligence to acquire fiber optic-guided unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in Moscow. These UAVs, capable of carrying payloads up to 20kg, are commonly used by the Russian military for resupply and attack missions. The perpetrators used stolen social media accounts belonging to Russian citizens to try and contact the manufacturer.

Warning about attacks using civilian objects.

The FSB warns that special operations agencies are constantly changing the methods used to disguise IEDs as everyday objects. Previous seizures have uncovered explosives hidden in a wide variety of items:

  • Household appliances: Electric stove, power bank, portable speaker.
  • Personal items: Nail kit, hair care products, perfume.
  • Other items: Religious symbols, automotive parts, and protective eyewear for FPV UAVs.

Security agencies advise citizens to be especially vigilant about strange objects and to report immediately to authorities if they detect any signs of personal data or social media accounts being compromised.
