Police officer prosecuted for arbitrarily removing candidate's name
On November 23, the People's Court of Kien Hai district (Kien Giang) sentenced Son Van Dong (48 years old, former police officer of An Son commune) to 18 months in prison for violating citizens' rights to vote and run for election.
Dong also had to compensate the budget more than 120 million VND for the cost of organizing the re-election.
According to the indictment, before the election of National Assembly and People's Council deputies at all levels for the 2016-2021 term in May, An Son commune officials promised to repair the road and provide domestic water to group 6, Cu Tron hamlet - where Dong resided - but did not do so.
Angry, Dong tricked many people into voting for 22 ballots, crossing out the candidate who was a commune People's Committee official.
The incident was discovered, and polling area No. 2 of An Son commune had to re-run the election in early June.
