Lychee harvesting has begun in Bac Giang, Hai Duong, and Hung Yen provinces, with an estimated yield of 180,000 tons, a decrease compared to last year, but improved quality is leading to a slight upward trend in prices.

Early-season lychees are being sold at a Hanoi-style vegetable and fruit store (District 3, Ho Chi Minh City) for 70,000 VND/kg.

Mr. Tran Quang Tan, Director of the Department of Industry and Trade of Bac Giang province, said that this year the total lychee production in the province is estimated at 130,000 tons, a decrease of 65,000 tons compared to last year due to unfavorable weather conditions. Of this, early-ripening lychees are estimated at 23,000 tons, and main-season lychees at 107,000 tons.

Specifically, according to Mr. Tan, more than 200 households in Luc Ngan district have been granted 15 codes for lychee growing areas covering 158 hectares by the US, adhering to GlobalGAP standards.

The entire lychee orchard is cultivated and cared for under strict supervision of the production process. The expected yield is approximately 1,000 tons, suitable for export to the US, Australia, the EU, and other countries.

Meanwhile, according to Mr. Ngo Ba Dinh, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Thanh Ha district (Hai Duong province), the lychee production in the district reached approximately 25,000 tons, a decrease of 3,000 tons compared to last year.

Although the yield has decreased, the quality of lychees this year is higher than last year. Currently, the purchase price of early-season lychees at the orchard ranges from 35,000 to 48,000 VND/kg.

To avoid the situation of a bumper lychee harvest leading to price drops, provincial leaders have stated that they have implemented trade promotion activities in Lao Cai and will soon expand these efforts to Lang Son, Ho Chi Minh City, and Hanoi to prevent bottlenecks in lychee sales and boost exports to more markets.

In Ho Chi Minh City, lychees are currently scarce, appearing only sporadically at a few specialty shops on Nguyen Dinh Chieu Street and Pham Van Hai Market. Traders say the price is quite high, ranging from 70,000 to 90,000 VND/kg, and in some places even 120,000 VND/kg, but there isn't much stock available.
