Since December 24, Toyota Vietnam has begun recalling 3,810 Vios cars manufactured in Vietnam due to faulty front passenger airbags..

Toyota said that the 3,810 vehicles mentioned above were manufactured between September 13, 2007 and December 31, 2008. This recall campaign is part of the Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) Global Recall Program for various vehicle models with a total of approximately 7,949,000 vehicles. According to information provided by TMC, the list and number of Toyota vehicles in Vietnam affected are as follows:

According to Toyota Vietnam (TMV), due to the large number of vehicles affected by this campaign worldwide, the production and supply of replacement parts from suppliers will take more time than originally expected by Toyota Motor Corporation Japan. Therefore, starting from December 22, 2015, TMV can begin implementing the campaign for domestically produced Vios vehicles.

Previously, since September 25, 2015, Toyota has recalled 148 genuine imported Corolla cars manufactured between November 3, 2004 and April 28, 2005 with similar errors.

According to Toyota Global, the affected vehicles are equipped with front passenger airbag inflators supplied by Takata (airbag supplier), which were improperly manufactured and pose a risk of moisture intrusion over time.

The inflator is part of the airbag assembly. It contains a solid fuel pad that is ignited when the airbag is deployed. This releases an inert gas that inflates the airbag. In the event of an accident involving an affected vehicle and the airbag system is deployed, depending on the circumstances, the release of the inert gas could create a high internal pressure and result in the inflator assembly rupturing, and metal fragments of the inflator could be ejected through the inflated airbag, potentially causing injury to the occupants.

Therefore, TMV will inspect and replace free of charge the entire airbag inflator assembly in the front passenger airbag for all genuine imported Corolla and domestically manufactured and assembled Vios vehicles affected by the Campaign at all Dealers/Dealer Branches and authorized Service Stations of TMV nationwide. The inspection and replacement time is approximately 1.4 hours for Corolla vehicles and 2.0 hours for Vios vehicles. If customers have any questions, please contact the dealer where the vehicle was purchased or call the TMV hotline at: 18001524 or 0916001524.

Driver-side airbags supplied by other suppliers (other than Takata) are not affected by this campaign.

For vehicles not manufactured, imported and distributed by TMV, upon receiving a request from the vehicle owner, TMV will assist in contacting Toyota Motor Corporation Japan to confirm the information. After receiving confirmation and agreement from TMC, TMV will conduct a free inspection and replacement of the air pump assembly in the front passenger airbag for the customer.
