Nearly 4,000 Vios cars in Vietnam are being recalled.
Starting December 24th, Toyota Vietnam began recalling 3,810 Vios vehicles manufactured in Vietnam due to a faulty front passenger airbag..
Toyota stated that the 3,810 vehicles in question were manufactured between September 13, 2007, and December 31, 2008. This recall campaign is part of Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC)'s global recall program for various models, affecting approximately 7,949,000 vehicles. According to information provided by TMC, the list and number of affected Toyota vehicles in Vietnam are as follows:
According to Toyota Vietnam (TMV), due to the large number of vehicles affected by this campaign worldwide, the production and supply of replacement parts by suppliers requires more time than initially anticipated by Toyota Motor Corporation of Japan. Therefore, TMV could only begin implementing the campaign for domestically produced Vios vehicles starting from December 22, 2015.
Previously, starting on September 25, 2015, Toyota initiated a recall of 148 officially imported Corolla vehicles manufactured between November 3, 2004, and April 28, 2005, due to a similar defect.

According to Toyota Global, the affected vehicles are equipped with front passenger airbag inflator assemblies supplied by Takata (an airbag supplier), which were improperly manufactured, posing a risk of moisture ingress over time.
The inflator is a component of the airbag assembly. It contains a solid fuel cell that is burned when the airbag is deployed. This process releases inert gas to inflate the airbag. In the event of an accident involving an affected vehicle and the airbag system is deployed, depending on the circumstances, the release of inert gas can create significant internal pressure, potentially leading to the inflator assembly rupturing. Metal fragments from the inflator could then be ejected through the inflated airbag, posing a risk of injury to passengers.
Therefore, TMV will inspect and replace the entire front passenger airbag inflator assembly free of charge for all genuine imported Corolla and domestically manufactured and assembled Vios vehicles affected by the Campaign at all TMV authorized Dealers/Branch Dealers and Service Stations nationwide. The inspection and replacement time is approximately 1.4 hours for Corolla and 2.0 hours for Vios. If customers have any questions, please contact the dealer where you purchased the vehicle or call TMV's hotline at 18001524 or 0916001524.
For driver-side airbags supplied by a different vendor (not Takata), this campaign will not be affected.
For vehicles not manufactured, imported, and distributed by TMV, upon receiving a request from the vehicle owner, TMV will assist in contacting Toyota Motor Corporation in Japan to verify the information. After receiving confirmation and agreement from TMC, TMV will proceed with the inspection and free replacement of the front passenger airbag inflator assembly for the customer.
