Mounting license plates under the vehicle or high up is a popular trend for beautifying motorbikes, but it is illegal and can result in a fine.

On some models of sporty motorcycles and scooters in Vietnam, users are tending to install license plates "under the ground" or high up to increase the aesthetics of the vehicle.

The question that many car players wonder is whether this is a violation or not and how harmful it is.

The method of installing a license plate under the ground or high up was originally used by bikers on large displacement motorbikes, originating from removing the rear fender, to increase the sportiness of the vehicle.

However, road users do not fully understand the harmful effects of installing license plates under the ground or high up. At the same time, the law does not have specific regulations on how to install license plates for motorbikes. This creates inadequacies and gaps in controlling vehicles participating in traffic.

Lawyer Nguyen Anh Thom, head of Nguyen Anh Law Office, Hanoi Bar Association said: "Based on Article 17 of Decree 46/2013/ND-CP regulating administrative sanctions for violations in the field of road and railway traffic. Penalties for drivers of motorbikes, mopeds (including electric motorbikes), motorbike-like vehicles and moped-like vehicles violating regulations on vehicle conditions when participating in traffic. Fines from 80,000 VND to 100,000 VND for one of the following violations:

a) Driving a vehicle without a horn; license plate light; brake light; or without a rearview mirror on the driver's left side or without a functional one;

b) Driving a vehicle with an improper license plate; license plate with unclear letters or numbers; license plate that is bent, covered, or damaged;

c) Driving a vehicle without signal lights or with lights that do not work.

License plates that are mounted under the vehicle or are tilted high will limit visibility and make it difficult to control. Therefore, drivers of motorbikes, mopeds or similar vehicles with license plates mounted under the vehicle or are tilted high will still be fined from 80,000 to 100,000 VND according to Point b, Clause 1, Article 17".

Installing license plates incorrectly or arbitrarily changing or removing the original design of the manufacturer will be fined from 80,000 to 100,000 VND.

Installing a license plate that is too low or too high is a violation of the law. It makes it difficult for authorities to control vehicles on the road.

Although the purpose is to beautify and enhance the personality of your car, traffic participants should be aware and carefully study the legal regulations on license plate installation. License plates should be installed in accordance with the manufacturer's specifications and design, and should not be arbitrarily changed or removed from necessary details.
