Meet the bright and studious girl from Vinh City with a sweet folk singing voice.
(Baonghean.vn) - Not only is she academically gifted, but she also sings beautifully. At the 4th Inter-provincial Nghe Tinh Folk Song Festival, Pham Nguyen Mai Uyen (10 years old), a 5th grade student from Ben Thuy Primary School, Vinh City, was honored with the "Best Young Performer" award.
Mai Uyên is the eldest of two sisters in a family living in Hung Dung ward, Vinh City. Her parents are business owners, but she loves the arts, especially sentimental folk music and the "ví" and "giặm" folk songs. At the age of four, Mai Uyên already knew how to sing folk songs, and by the age of six, she was performing on stage. Currently, she can sing many "ví" and "giặm" folk melodies fluently with a sweet voice and graceful, captivating vocal embellishments.

Having been familiar with the stage since a young age, Uyên is quite confident and natural in her communication and performances. Her family's apartment in the Muong Thanh building is never without the sound of singing. She sings while doing housework, playing, during meals, and even before bedtime. Besides music lessons at school, she frequently goes online to watch videos, listen to artists sing, and sing along. Mai Uyên's most frequent music teacher is social media.
According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Hai Loi, the child's mother, seeing her daughter's talent in arts and culture, the family created every opportunity for her to participate in collective activities at school, in her class, and in various associations and organizations... hoping that these activities would help her mature.
Five years ago, Uyen was taken by her parents to the "Young Talents" folk singing class taught directly by People's Artist Hong Luu, and she has remained dedicated to this class ever since. Thanks to this, her singing voice has been continuously refined and improved, becoming sweeter and sweeter.

Mai Uyên has a voice well-suited to folk songs and sentimental songs about her homeland with folk influences. Besides her forte in the Ví and Giặm folk songs, Uyên can also sing Ca Trù and recite verses from the Tale of Kiều… Over time, audiences across the country have come to know this young girl from Vinh City through her captivating performances of songs such as: "Returning to Nghe An with You," "Mother's Lullaby," "Homeland," "Wherever I Go, I Always Remember Ha Tinh," "Let's Go Back to Ha Tinh," "Oh, the Beloved Ví Melody…"
What's even more admirable about Mai Uyên is her frequent participation in charity programs and fundraising efforts to help families in need. Recently, she's been seen more often at charity music nights, from Viên Quang Pagoda (Nam Đàn), Đức Hậu Pagoda (Vinh), to the memorial service at Thái Lão Cemetery (Hưng Nguyên), and soon at a charity music night in Thanh Thủy commune (Thanh Chương)...

Every time her child goes on a long tour, Ms. Loi or her husband have to drop everything related to their business to go with them, sometimes even to Hanoi, Quang Tri, or Ho Chi Minh City... Ms. Loi believes that letting her child participate in such activities allows them to gain experience on stage, learn about life, and become more mature.
Not only is she a talented singer, Mai Uyên is also an intelligent and academically gifted girl, achieving excellent student status for four consecutive years. “As the class deputy for academics, besides taking care of the class's studies, I often tutor the students who are struggling academically. Every time I do something good, the teacher praises me, and I feel very happy,” Mai Uyên shared. Teacher Tran Cong Thanh, the principal of Ben Thuy Primary School, said: “Mai Uyên is a well-behaved, academically gifted student who sings well and has made many contributions to the school's arts and culture activities.”
