Endoscopic removal of dentures from the esophagus.
(Baonghean.vn) - A set of six dentures was recently removed by doctors from the esophagus of a 53-year-old male patient in Hoang Mai, Quynh Luu, Nghe An province, using endoscopy at the Ear, Nose and Throat Department of Nghe An General Hospital.
Admitted to the hospital on September 8th with symptoms of anxiety, burning pain behind the sternum, and difficulty swallowing, patient Nguyen Van Ng. reported that he accidentally swallowed his dentures while eating noodles for breakfast. He tried to remove them himself but was unsuccessful, so he rushed to the hospital for intervention.
At Nghe An General Hospital, doctors quickly performed an endoscopic procedure through the mouth and discovered a set of six dentures stuck in the esophagus. “Using endoscopic instruments and with the assistance of muscle relaxants, we gently manipulated the dentures, carefully rotating them slowly to successfully remove them, minimizing damage to the esophageal mucosa. Currently, patient Ng.'s health is stable, and she is being fed through a gastric tube,” said Dr. Tang Xuan Hai, Head of the Ear, Nose, and Throat Department.

Dr. Hai advises that to avoid choking on foreign objects, people should be cautious when eating, chewing thoroughly, swallowing slowly, and avoiding eating hastily to prevent choking or aspiration. Those with dentures should be even more careful when eating, especially old dentures that may be worn down, loose, or not securely attached to the jaw, which can easily fall out and enter the digestive or respiratory tract. If choking or aspiration occurs, it is crucial to go to the hospital immediately for prompt medical intervention.
