After being severely damaged by floods, the Bai Oi suspension bridge spanning the Lam River in Con Cuong commune (Nghe An province) is being constructed at an accelerated pace by contractors, with the determination to complete it before Tet to ensure safe travel for the people.

The Bai Oi suspension bridge is a vital link across the Lam River, connecting National Highway 7 and the center of Con Cuong commune, serving 108 households in Bai Oi village. Built and put into operation in 2012, the bridge is 255.2 meters long, 2.6 meters wide, and cost 24 billion VND. Over the years, the Bai Oi suspension bridge has played a crucial role in promoting socio-economic development and eliminating the isolation of the local people.

However, after many years of operation, especially the heavy rains and floods that occurred at the end of July 2025, the abutments and approach spans of the suspension bridge to National Highway 7 were damaged by landslides; two cable-stayed pier boxes cracked, seriously affecting the movement of people.

Because it is the only suspension bridge across the Lam River connecting Bai Oi village with National Highway 7, immediately after the bridge was damaged by floods, to ensure the safety of people and vehicles, the Con Cuong commune authorities posted signs prohibiting motorized vehicles from crossing the bridge. At the same time, they temporarily placed steel beams at the bridge abutments so that people could cross by motorbike and bicycle.

Mr. Cao Tien Thinh, Head of the Economic Department of Con Cuong Commune, said: After the Bai Oi suspension bridge was damaged by floods, the Commune People's Committee quickly reported to higher authorities and coordinated with specialized units to survey the current condition and assess the extent of the damage. Based on that, they proposed a plan for repair and reinforcement.

Shortly afterwards, through connections with higher authorities, the Vietnam Gas Corporation, a subsidiary of the Vietnam National Energy and Industry Group, provided 2 billion VND in funding, and the Vietnam-Russia Joint Venture Vietsovpetro also provided 2 billion VND for the repair of the Bai Oi suspension bridge. Currently, the construction units are urgently carrying out the repairs, including the following items:Reinforcing the bridge piers and cable system, addressing the eroded abutments, backfilling the foundations at both ends of the bridge, repairing the bridge deck, and replacing damaged parts are all aimed at ensuring long-term structural safety.

According to Mr. Thinh, repairing the Bai Oi suspension bridge is not only about fixing a damaged structure, but also an urgent task to ensure traffic safety and stabilize the lives of the people.

"We recognize this as an important public infrastructure project, and failure to repair it promptly will significantly impact the lives and production of the people. Therefore, the local authorities are actively coordinating with the construction units to urgently carry out the repair work, ensuring completion before the upcoming Lunar New Year of the Horse," Mr. Thinh emphasized.
