Coffee prices are showing signs of recovery after the US decided to lower import tariffs from Vietnam to 10%. This is positive news for Vietnamese farmers, especially in the context that they have been proactively holding back their goods due to concerns about tight supply over the past four years. This tax reduction is seen as a temporary relief in the escalating trade war.

However, analysts still warn of the risk of a global economic recession, which could have a strong impact on commodity trade, including coffee. Previously, high tariffs had raised concerns that coffee and cocoa prices would continue to escalate, when global supplies were already struggling.

According to Mr. Marcio Ferreira, President of the Brazilian Coffee Exporters Association (Cecafe), world coffee prices have continuously increased due to the decline in global production, affected by prolonged extreme weather in key producing countries such as Brazil, Vietnam and Indonesia. This has caused the coffee market to become highly volatile, and the expectation of a short-term recovery is still quite fragile.

Another factor supporting the coffee price increase is the sharp decline in coffee exports from Brazil in March. Specifically, the volume of green coffee beans exported decreased by 26.5% compared to the same period last year, to 2.95 million bags. Of which, Arabica coffee decreased by nearly 11%, to 2.81 million bags, and Robusta coffee decreased by 84%, reaching only 138,500 bags.

Despite the decrease in export volume, Brazil's coffee export revenue in March still increased by 41.8% to reach 1.32 billion USD. The reason is that coffee prices increased in the context of scarce global supply.
