Why have coffee prices risen sharply?
The continued tight global supply of robusta coffee is a major supporting factor forcoffee pricesRobusta coffee inventories on the ICE exchange have fallen to 3,687 lots, the lowest level in nearly 17 months.
Arabica coffee inventories on the ICE exchange also fell to 477,045 bags, the lowest level in about 2.5 months.
Traders believe that the continued closure of the Strait of Hormuz is disrupting the global coffee supply chain. Rising shipping, insurance, and fuel costs are keeping international coffee prices pegged at high levels.
In addition to geopolitical factors, the sharp rise of the Brazilian Real to its highest level against the USD since January 2024 has also led Brazilian farmers to limit sales. When the domestic currency strengthens, coffee growers earn less money when exporting in USD.
Global coffee exports continue to rise.
Data from the International Coffee Organization (ICO) shows that global coffee exports in March 2026 reached 13.59 million bags, higher than the 13.37 million bags exported in the same period last year.
In the first six months of the 2025-2026 crop year, global coffee exports reached 70.91 million bags, a 3.3% increase compared to the same period of the previous crop year.
Global robusta exports in the last 12 months reached 59.85 million bags, a sharp increase from the previous 51.92 million bags. Conversely, arabica exports decreased to 82.70 million bags.
Coffee price forecast
Many experts believe thatcoffee pricesThere is still room for growth in the short term due to low inventories and the fact that robusta supply has not improved significantly.
However, the upward momentum could be limited if Brazil enters a favorable harvest season as expected and global exports continue to expand in the coming months.
