Domestic coffee prices have fallen sharply amid a series of incidents involving fake coffee. This has not only undermined consumer confidence but also negatively affected the business operations of the entire industry.
Fake coffee is becoming a growing problem as many manufacturers use non-coffee bean ingredients, such as corn, soybeans, coffee husks or grounds. They then add additives and chemicals to create a flavor similar to real coffee, making it difficult for consumers to recognize.
Currently, the detection of fake coffee is mainly based on caffeine content. If the actual caffeine content is lower than 70% of the declared level (usually 1%), the product can be suspected of being fake. However, this test is not really effective, because if the manufacturer skillfully mixes the ingredients, the product still meets the prescribed caffeine threshold.
In the world, consumers often prefer pure, unmixed coffee. However, in Vietnam, the habit of using coffee mixed with many other ingredients is still popular. This increases the risk of consumers using poor quality or unsafe coffee.
