According to Mr. Nguyen Nam Hai, Chairman of the Vietnam Coffee and Cocoa Association (Vicofa), Vietnam's robusta coffee production in the 2024-2025 crop year is expected to reach 26.5 million bags, a decrease compared to 27 million bags in the previous crop year.

The 2024-2025 harvest is currently in its final stages, and the coffee plants will enter the bean development phase for the next crop. Thanks to abundant rainfall, the coffee flowers are developing well, creating favorable conditions for future supply.

The Vietnamese coffee industry is aiming to achieve annual revenue of $20 billion in the near future. However, the biggest challenges remain the low rate of deep processing, the lack of product diversification, intense competition, and increasingly stringent international market standards.

The EU, which accounts for 41% of Vietnam's coffee exports, has introduced the EU's Anti-Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), requiring products to have clear traceability. This creates an urgent need to develop digital maps and traceability systems down to the individual farm.

According to Mr. Nguyen Tien Dung, Director of Sustainable Agriculture at Simexco Dak Lak, due to the small-scale nature of production, digitizing the supply chain requires significant time and cost, and necessitates coordination between the government, businesses, and farmers to adapt to international standards.

World coffee prices today

Coffee prices on the world market are also subject to many fluctuations:

Robusta coffee (London):

Delivery in May 2025: Decreased by $85/ton, to $5,443/ton.

July 2025 delivery: Decreased by $85/ton, to $5,421/ton.

Arabica coffee (New York):

May 2025 delivery: Down 12.2 cents/lb, to 373.5 cents/lb.

July 2025 delivery: Down 11 cents/lb, to 367.55 cents/lb.

Robusta coffee prices on the market are being supported by slow sales from Vietnamese farmers. Currently, many farmers are still holding onto about 30% - 40% of their stock, expecting prices to continue rising.

According to data from Vietnam Customs, in the first five months of the 2024-2025 crop year (from October 2024 to February 2025), Vietnam's coffee exports reached only 539,923 tons, a decrease of 21.5% compared to the same period of the previous crop year.

According to Bloomberg, Vietnam's coffee production in the current crop year is expected to decrease compared to last year due to weather conditions, exacerbating the global supply shortage. This has contributed to higher world coffee prices.

Not only Vietnam, but many other major coffee-producing countries such as Brazil are also facing harvesting problems, leading to tight supply. Robusta futures prices in London have risen nearly 70% over the past year due to concerns about supply shortages.
