Coffee prices have continued to rise sharply in recent sessions, primarily due to news from the Trump administration that it will maintain import tariffs at 10% on goods from 75 countries that have not retaliated. At the same time, the US dollar recorded its deepest decline in three years, prompting investors to liquidate previously opened short positions.

Meanwhile, global supply continues to be a cause for concern. Cecafe reported that green coffee exports in March fell by as much as 26% compared to the same period last year, to just 2.95 million bags.

The Vietnam Coffee and Cocoa Association has also just revised down its forecast for the 2024/25 crop year to 26.5 million bags, significantly lower than the 28 million bags announced in December.

In addition, the General Department of Vietnam Customs reported that coffee exports in the first quarter of this year decreased by 15.3% compared to the same period last year, to 495,780 tons. This is a significant decrease during the main export period of the year.

World coffee prices today

Coffee prices on the world market continued to rise sharply on both exchanges:

Robusta coffee (London):

May 2025 delivery: Increased by $117/ton, to $5216/ton.

July 2025 delivery: Increased by $118/ton, to $5167/ton.

Arabica coffee (New York):

May 2025 delivery: Increased by 2.35 cents/lb, to 360.05 cents/lb.

The Robusta coffee market reacted similarly, with inventories monitored by the ICE exchange falling to their lowest level in six weeks, at just 4,253 lots. This signals that supply is tightening.

Robusta coffee prices have recovered from their lowest point since mid-January, particularly after regaining the important psychological mark of $5,000 per ton.

However, to confirm a sustainable upward trend, the market needs to maintain and surpass the technical threshold of $5,140/ton amidst ongoing economic and political instability and fluctuating tariff issues.
