Vietnam currently has approximately 730,000 hectares of coffee plantations, with Robusta accounting for up to 95% of the area. Thanks to its suitable soil and climate, Vietnamese coffee boasts a distinct quality compared to many other producing countries, helping the industry maintain a strong position in the global market.

Vietnam's annual coffee production reaches 1.8 to 2 million tons, ranking second globally with approximately 18% market share. The majority of this production is exported, at around 1.5 million tons per year. This figure is equivalent to 18% of total world coffee exports and accounts for 43% of global Robusta production.

Europe remains the largest market for Vietnamese coffee, accounting for nearly 50% of total exports. However, over 91% of Vietnamese coffee exported internationally is still green coffee beans, not undergoing deep processing. In the instant and roasted coffee sector, over 81% of the market share belongs to FDI enterprises, resulting in a large portion of the added value going to foreign companies.

According to Mr. Nguyen Nam Hai, Chairman of VICOFA, although Vietnam ranks second in production and export, and is the leader in Robusta coffee, Vietnamese coffee is little known to consumers in the US and many other markets. The main reason lies in the limited deep processing and the fact that Vietnamese coffee brands have not been built to match their inherent potential.

Three consecutive days of declines indicate that the coffee market is under strong pressure from unfavorable news regarding supply. The downward trend is occurring rapidly as multiple factors simultaneously put pressure on investor sentiment and increase selling pressure.

The biggest factor stems from expectations that the US may soon remove its 50% tariff on Brazilian coffee. The US Treasury Secretary's statement about an "important announcement" coming soon has further heightened market sensitivity. In addition, StoneX's new forecast suggests that Brazil's 2026/27 crop could see a 29% increase in production, reinforcing concerns about a potential supply surplus in the near future.

The factors that previously boosted coffee prices have weakened. Heavy rainfall in Brazil, reaching 160% of the average, has eased concerns about drought, diminishing expectations of tighter supply. Furthermore, abundant Robusta coffee from Vietnam, with exports increasing by 13.4% in the first 10 months and favorable prospects for the new crop, is putting additional pressure on the market.

The few remaining supporting factors are global inventories remaining very low, with Arabica at a 1.75-year low and Robusta at a 3.75-month low, along with a 52% reduction in US purchases from Brazil over the past three months. However, this positive news is not strong enough to hold prices steady against the current sell-off.
