As coffee prices continue to rise, coffee growers are not only delighted by improved incomes but also face a new problem: the sharp increase in the cost of hiring labor for harvesting.

Coffee picking requires workers to be in good health, skillful, and understand the correct harvesting techniques to avoid damaging the plants for the next crop. Therefore, labor costs in many localities have increased significantly this year.

In key coffee-growing regions like Dak Lak, Gia Lai, and Lam Dong, coffee pickers are paid by the day or based on yield. On average, each worker can earn between 500,000 and 1,000,000 VND per day, depending on productivity and the difficulty of the coffee plantation.

While this income level is attractive, many orchard owners still face difficulties due to labor shortages during peak season, especially as a large number of young people leave their hometowns to work in the city.

Despite the emergence of new models such as volunteer work or integrated agricultural tourism, in the long term, the Vietnamese coffee industry still needs sustainable solutions regarding labor and mechanization to maintain productivity and quality amidst volatile coffee prices.
