Coffee prices are rising, helping growers earn high profits. However, longtime coffee growers fear a similar scenario to 1994, when coffee prices hit a historic peak and then fell into a glut, sending prices to multi-year lows.

According to Mr. Trinh Duc Minh, Chairman of Buon Ma Thuot Coffee Association, the fluctuations in coffee prices are only short-term. Many farmers still persist in producing specialty coffee to maintain their brand, even though some areas have had to reduce production.

Currently, each year Vietnam has about 500 - 600 tons of specialty coffee recognized through competitions, but this number is still very low compared to the target of 5,000 tons set for the period up to 2025.

In addition, during the production of specialty coffee, 5,000 - 6,000 tons of high-quality coffee (not meeting specialty standards but still of superior quality) are also produced. This is a source of goods that is very popular in the market due to its good quality and reasonable price.

Despite the volatility in the coffee market, investing in sustainable production and enhancing the value of coffee beans remains an important long-term strategy.

As coffee prices hit record highs, thefts have increased, particularly on trucks transporting coffee, according to a Reuters report. To combat this, some importers have fitted tracking devices to coffee bags to protect the cargo during transport.

The International Coffee Organization (ICO) also said in its February report that average global coffee prices increased 14.3% month-on-month, while export volumes fell 14.2% year-on-year.

In the US, the National Coffee Association (NCA) has asked the Trump administration to waive tariffs on imported coffee, saying the additional tariffs on Canada and Mexico could increase coffee prices in the US by up to 50%.

NCA President Bill Murray stressed that there is no alternative to imported coffee. He said that unlike other commodities that can be produced domestically, the US does not grow coffee, so tariffs would hit the industry hard.
