Coffee prices in the Central Highlands fell sharply in May and reached their lowest level in 4.5 months. Specifically, the average coffee price in May decreased by 14,200 to 14,300 VND/kg.

Last week, Gia Lai was the locality that recorded the sharpest decrease of 5,200 VND/kg. In Dak Lak and Dak Nong provinces, coffee prices also decreased by 5,000 VND/kg. In Lam Dong province, a similar decrease brought the transaction price to the lowest level in the region.

According to Reuters, Vietnamese coffee prices have also fallen in line with international developments. The main reason is that supplies from major producing countries are increasing, reducing the pressure of scarcity.

A trader in Ho Chi Minh City said Vietnamese coffee prices are now higher than those of competitors, slowing trade. In addition, rising shipping costs due to concerns about the end of the US tariff moratorium are also affecting trade.

World coffee prices today

Coffee prices on the world market continued to fall sharply last week. On the London exchange, robusta coffee for delivery in July 2025 closed the week at $4,510/ton, down 5.8% from the previous week. The September contract fell even further, down 6.7%, to just $4,463/ton.

Similarly, on the New York floor, the price of Arabica coffee for July 2025 delivery fell 5.1% to 342.45 US cents/pound. The September contract also lost 5.3% to 339.8 US cents/pound. This is the lowest level for Arabica in 7 weeks and the lowest level for Robusta in 6.5 months.

The lack of consistency in US tax policy makes the market unpredictable. Traders and processors find it difficult to plan production and finances as they constantly have to adjust to unexpected decisions on import tariffs.

The forward contract that once helped stabilize the market is now almost no longer effective, leaving real coffee prices to float. However, in that situation, the export price of robusta in producing countries has the opportunity to increase sharply. Vietnam alone has recorded a record high export price of robusta, up to 5,700 USD/ton according to data from the General Department of Customs.

Traders are offering grade 2 robusta, 5% broken black, at a premium of $150 to $180 a tonne over the September contract on LIFFE. In domestic growing areas, the weather remains favorable and there is enough water for the plants to grow well.
