Mr. Thai Nhu Hiep, Vice President of the Vietnam Coffee and Cocoa Association (VICOFA), said that Brazil and Indonesia started their coffee harvest in May. Due to the large output, the strong increase in supply has caused the market to fall into a surplus, thereby causing coffee prices to drop rapidly.

Coffee prices have been too high for too long, so when the market corrects, the decline becomes deeper. At the same time, roasters are now limiting their purchases and waiting for prices to fall further to establish a new price level.

The lack of supply has caused the market to fall into a state of instability. Speculators on the exchange compete to short sell and dump their stocks, pushing coffee prices into an uncontrolled decline.

Despite the market facing many fluctuations, Vietnam’s coffee export prospects in the last 6 months of the year are still assessed positively. Key markets such as the European Union (EU) and the US continue to be bright spots, especially in the context of many other exporting countries facing tariff barriers.

Recently, US President Donald Trump unexpectedly announced an increase in import tax on goods from Brazil from 10% to 50%, effective from August 1. Some other major coffee exporting countries such as Mexico are also subject to a 30% tax rate, while Canada is 35%. In that context, Vietnam can take advantage of this opportunity to expand its market share and increase export turnover in the coming time.
