Amid concerns about retaliatory tariffs from the US, Vietnamese pepper exporters remain cautious, while the industry hopes to expand into the Chinese market to alleviate pressure.
Mr. Le Viet Anh, Chief of the Office of the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA), said that export businesses are not overly worried at the moment, as the US still depends almost entirely on pepper imports, with 60-70% coming from Vietnam. According to him, the final retaliatory tariff may not be too high, and the US market will remain an important destination.
China is a huge potential market that the industry needs to focus on exploiting more systematically. With a consumption demand of 90,000-100,000 tons per year, while domestic production only meets about 20,000-30,000 tons, China still has to import 60,000-70,000 tons annually. This is an opportunity for Vietnamese pepper to expand its market share and enhance its position in the international market.
World coffee prices today
Coffee prices on the world market fell slightly on both exchanges:
Robusta coffee (London):
July 2025 delivery: Decreased by $20/ton, to $4,014/ton.
Delivery in September 2025: Decreased by $25/ton, to $3,862/ton.
Arabica coffee (New York):
July 2025 delivery: Down 1.9 cents/lb, to 320.4 cents/lb.
September 2025 delivery: Down 2.25 cents/lb, to 315.55 cents/lb.
The London coffee market maintained a moderate pace of trading due to the lack of leadership from the New York exchange, which was closed for Juneteenth. On the same day, many major coffee-producing countries, including Brazil, also observed Corpus Christi Day, resulting in generally subdued international trading.
According to Cooxupé, the world's largest coffee cooperative, as of June 13th, only 17.8% of the 2025 arabica crop had been harvested, equivalent to approximately 1.09 million bags out of a projected 6.1 million bags. This rate is significantly lower than the 26.6% harvested during the same period in 2024, indicating slow harvesting progress due to unfavorable weather conditions.
In terms of inventory, as of June 18th, the amount of certified wet-processed arabica coffee stored at the New York Exchange reached 861,143 bags, a slight increase of 4.45% compared to the same period last year. However, compared to the beginning of 2025, this figure is still down more than 10%, indicating that supply pressure has not been fully relieved.
