In the first five months of 2025, Vietnam's coffee exports to the US reached 60,600 tons, an 11% increase compared to the same period last year. This was due to businesses boosting exports during the tax deferral period.
Despite growth, Vietnam's coffee market share in the US is only 7%, lower than the 10% target of 2024. Vietnam remains the third largest supplier to the US, but its geographical distance from Brazil could slow down export growth.

The Trump administration is preparing to impose a 50% tariff on coffee imports from Brazil, which supplies 30% of the coffee consumed in the United States. If implemented, this tariff (in addition to the current 10% tariff) would cause a sharp increase in coffee prices, affecting both roasters and consumers.
Not only Brazil, but the US has also announced new tariffs on coffee from Vietnam (accounting for 17% of global production), Colombia (8%), Ethiopia, and Indonesia (6%). This makes finding alternative sources of supply difficult. According to US statistics, the price of roasted coffee has increased by 12.7% and instant coffee by 16.3% compared to last year. Currently, each pound (0.45kg) of ground coffee costs $8.13, an increase of more than $1 in just half a year.
Experts predict prices will rise significantly within weeks to months after the tax takes effect, depending on businesses' inventory levels. While roasters may be able to find alternative sources, this will be difficult as many other countries are also subject to similar taxes.
