The 2024-2025 coffee harvest in Kbang district, Gia Lai province, recorded a fairly good yield. Mr. Nguyen Van Trang's family, a farmer in Dak Roong commune, harvested approximately 10 tons of coffee beans from their 3 hectares of land. After the Lunar New Year in 2025, he sold half of the coffee at 120,000 VND/kg to pay off debts and cover living expenses.

He decided to keep the remaining 5 tons because he noticed that coffee prices were steadily increasing week by week, month by month. According to Mr. Trang, this is an unprecedentedly high price in the coffee industry, so everyone agreed to hold onto their stock, waiting for prices to continue rising before selling.

According to the leaders of the Vietnam Coffee and Cocoa Association (VICOFA), when coffee prices reached 130,000 VND/kg in early March, farmers in the Central Highlands and Southeast regions almost stopped selling. This forced purchasing units to raise prices to secure supplies.

Forecasts suggest that if the hoarding continues, coffee prices could reach 140,000, or even 150,000 VND/kg. However, this would also create difficulties for processing and exporting businesses due to sharply increased input costs.

World coffee prices today

Coffee prices on the world market have fallen sharply on both exchanges:

Robusta coffee (London):

Delivery in May 2025: Decreased by $111/ton, to $5,326/ton.

July 2025 delivery: Decreased by $93/ton, to $5,350/ton.

Arabica coffee (New York):

May 2025 delivery: Down 11.5 cents/lb, to 380.5 cents/lb.

July 2025 delivery: Down 9.75 cents/lb, to 376.4 cents/lb.

Market expert Nguyen Quang Binh commented that coffee prices on the world market have fallen in recent sessions due to the strengthening US dollar and forecasts of rain in Brazil, causing many to take profits. In addition, the amount of certified inventory on both exchanges has also increased, impacting market sentiment.

Nevertheless, physical coffee prices are likely to continue rising in the coming months. This is a period when major markets such as the US, Europe, and the Middle East are increasing imports, especially of robusta coffee, to meet the demands of the food and beverage industry.

The recent upward trend on both the London and New York exchanges is also expected to be a positive signal supporting domestic coffee prices in the medium and long term.

Weather forecasts from Climatempo indicate the possibility of rain in Brazil's coffee-growing regions this weekend, a factor that may cause a slight decline in global markets.

Robusta coffee inventories monitored by ICE have risen to their highest level in seven weeks, while arabica inventories have fallen to their lowest level in a month. In Brazil, the domestic market remains relatively quiet as financially sound farmers are not in a hurry to sell, holding on to wait for higher prices.

Furthermore, the monetary policy of the Brazilian Central Bank also affects the market. Last week, the Selic interest rate was raised to 14.25% and could increase further in May if inflation is not brought under control. This increases financing costs, slowing down sales by coffee growers in Brazil.
