According to data from Japanese Customs, in the first six months of 2025, Japan's coffee imports reached 191,000 tons, with a total value of nearly US$1.26 billion. Compared to the same period last year, the import volume decreased by 4.3%, but the value increased by 48.9%, mainly due to a sharp increase in coffee prices. Vietnam is currently the second largest supplier of coffee to Japan, after Brazil. However, Vietnam's market share has decreased from 32.8% in the first half of 2024 to 27.7% in the same period this year.
Specifically, Japan imported 52,900 tons of coffee from Vietnam, a 19% decrease compared to the same period last year, even though the average price reached $5,772 per ton, a 67.5% increase, much higher than the overall market increase of 55.5%.
According to the Vietnam Industry and Trade Information Center (VITIC), Vietnam's coffee exports peaked in March and tended to decline in the following months, indicating that businesses took advantage of the high coffee prices to boost sales. By July, export volume was still up 33.1% and value up 45.8% compared to the same period last year.
In the long term, coffee prices are projected to continue their upward trend thanks to stable global demand and limited supply. However, factors such as weather fluctuations, monetary policy, and exchange rates could still significantly impact market developments.

This is higher than the 86.1% of the previous week, but still lower than the 95.4% recorded at the same time last year.
Analysts believe that the recent surge in coffee prices is partly due to a decrease in certified inventories on the exchange. US roasters have been forced to seek alternative sources of supply after the government imposed a 50% tariff on coffee imported from Brazil.
Vanusia Nogueira, CEO of the International Coffee Organization (ICO), noted that factors such as US tariffs, the impact of climate change, and declining production in Brazil are contributing to the rise in coffee prices.
Speaking on the sidelines of an event organized by the Colombian Coffee Federation, she also shared that although coffee prices are trending upwards, the market remains volatile and uncertain due to increased consumption while global reserves are shrinking.
