In Dak Lao commune (Dak Mil district, Dak Nong province), the prolonged drought has caused most of the wells and water reservoirs to dry up. According to Mr. Truong Xuan Hung, Chairman of the commune's People's Committee, if the situation does not improve, about 700 hectares of crops are at risk of dying. Many areas may even need to be replanted if there is no irrigation water in the coming period.
Irrigation reservoir No. 40 – the main water supply facility in the commune – is currently undergoing repairs and renovations, so it cannot store water for agricultural production as usual.
The Dak Mil Irrigation Works Exploitation Company Limited can only pump water on a rotational basis to support farmers in combating drought. However, the amount of water supplied is insufficient to meet the irrigation needs of the large coffee growing area in the locality, forcing many farmers to buy water from outside to save their crops.
World coffee prices today
Coffee prices on the world market have fallen sharply on both exchanges:
Robusta coffee (London):
May 2025 delivery: Increased by $14/ton, to $5,365/ton.
July 2025 delivery: Increased by $27/ton, to $5,388/ton.
Arabica coffee (New York):
May 2025 delivery: Up 2.5 cents/lb, to 381.3 cents/lb.
July 2025 delivery: Up 3.05 cents/lb, to 378 cents/lb.
Arabica coffee prices fell to their lowest level in a month, while Robusta hit a nine-week low. The main reason was a massive sell-off by hedge funds following the release of a sharply declining consumer confidence index in the US, raising concerns about a potential recession. Many investors were forced to offload their holdings to cut their losses.
According to the latest survey from The Conference Board, the US consumer confidence index fell by 7.2 points to 92.9. This indicates widespread pessimism amid global economic instability and controversial tariff policies from US President Donald Trump. Furthermore, news of rain in Brazil's major coffee-growing regions also negatively impacted the market.
Despite the sharp drop in global coffee prices, domestic coffee prices remain at record highs. This is due to scarce supply on the global market, especially for Robusta coffee. In addition, drought conditions in Vietnam and Brazil continue to significantly impact production, increasing concerns about shortages.
The strengthening US dollar is also contributing to further pressure on coffee prices. The greenback is currently at a three-week high against the euro, as investors await announcements on new auto tax policies from the US President. Concerns about slowing economic growth and the risk of renewed inflation are making investors cautious.
However, Robusta prices have seen a less significant decrease than Arabica due to limited domestic supply. According to the Vietnam Coffee and Cocoa Association (Vicofa), domestic farmers are proactively holding onto their stock, waiting for prices to rise further instead of selling off their holdings en masse.
