In Dak Lao commune (Dak Mil district, Dak Nong province), prolonged drought has caused most of the people's wells and water storage ponds to dry up. According to Mr. Truong Xuan Hung - Chairman of the Commune People's Committee, if the situation does not improve, about 700 hectares of crops are at risk of withering. Many areas will even have to be replanted if there is no irrigation water in the near future.
Irrigation reservoir No. 40 - the main water supply project in the commune - is currently being repaired and renovated so it cannot store water for production as usual.
Dak Mil Irrigation Project Exploitation Company Limited can only pump water in rotation to support farmers in fighting drought. However, the amount of water provided is not enough to meet the irrigation needs of the large coffee acreage in the locality, forcing many farmers to buy water from outside to save the trees.
World coffee prices today
Coffee prices on the world market fell sharply on both exchanges:
Robusta Coffee (London):
Delivery in May 2025: Up 14 USD/ton, to 5,365 USD/ton.
July 2025 delivery: Up 27 USD/ton, to 5,388 USD/ton.
Arabica Coffee (New York):
May 2025 delivery: Up 2.5 cents/lb, to 381.3 cents/lb.
July 2025 delivery: Up 3.05 cents/lb, to 378 cents/lb.
Arabica coffee prices fell to a one-month low, while Robusta hit a nine-week low. The main reason was a massive sell-off by hedge funds after the US announced a sharp decline in consumer confidence, raising concerns about the risk of an economic recession. Many investors were forced to sell their stocks to cut losses.
According to the latest survey from The Conference Board, the consumer confidence index in the US fell 7.2 points to 92.9. This shows that pessimism is spreading in the context of global economic instability and controversial tariff policies from US President Donald Trump. In addition, information about rainy weather in Brazil's main coffee growing regions also negatively affected the market.
Despite the sharp drop in world coffee prices, domestic coffee prices remain at record highs. The reason is the scarcity of supply in the global market, especially Robusta coffee. In addition, dry weather in Vietnam and Brazil continues to greatly affect production, increasing concerns about shortages.
A stronger US dollar also weighed on coffee prices. The greenback hit a three-week high against the euro as investors awaited the announcement of new auto tariffs from the US president. Concerns about slowing economic growth and the return of inflation kept investors on their toes.
However, Robusta prices have decreased less than Arabica due to limited domestic supply. According to the Vietnam Coffee and Cocoa Association (Vicofa), domestic farmers are proactively holding onto their stocks, waiting for prices to increase further instead of selling massively.
