Coffee harvesting in the Central Highlands, Vietnam's key coffee-growing region, has resumed. According to a trader, the area has just experienced one or two days of dry weather. Although harvesting remains interrupted in some areas, the improved weather is a positive sign for the crop.
World coffee prices are closely monitoring weather conditions in Vietnam. Tropical storm Koto, the 15th storm to enter the South China Sea in 2025, unexpectedly weakened and was downgraded to a tropical depression earlier than predicted. According to LSEG Weather Research, the impact of this storm on coffee-growing regions in the Central Highlands is assessed as modest.
According to local media reports, the tropical depression is expected to move southwest at a speed of approximately 5 km/h. By 1:00 AM on December 2nd, the center of the depression will be about 200 km east of the coast of Gia Lai and Dak Lak provinces. The depression is forecast to weaken to level 6 with gusts of wind up to level 8.
The Vietnam National Disaster Monitoring System (VNDMS) reports that over the next 12 hours, the tropical depression will continue to move southwest at a speed of approximately 10 km/h. Afterward, the tropical depression is forecast to weaken into a low-pressure area off the coast of Gia Lai - Dak Lak. Less severe weather than expected could help stabilize domestic coffee supply and prices.
World coffee prices today
Coffee prices on the world market have risen sharply on both exchanges:
Robusta coffee (London):
Delivery in January 2026: Decreased by $92/ton, to $4,380/ton.
Delivery in March 2026: Decreased by $78/ton, to $4,260/ton.
Arabica coffee (New York):
December 2025 delivery: Down 2.7 cents/lb, to 408.8 cents/lb.
March 2026 delivery: Down 2.65 cents/lb, to 377.05 cents/lb.
Climate change is making it more difficult to grow Arabica coffee in Brazil. Therefore, Brazilian farmers are switching to Robusta, a variety that is more heat-tolerant and disease-resistant. This shift is reshaping the coffee production structure of this South American nation.
Brazil's Robusta production has grown rapidly. In the last three years, Robusta's growth rate has reached nearly 4.8% annually, far surpassing Arabica. This season, in particular, Robusta production has increased by nearly 22%, reaching a record high. This growth is a major driver of global Robusta coffee prices.
Brazilian farmers are expanding their Robusta coffee cultivation, even adopting advanced techniques such as growing under native trees. Vietnam is currently the largest Robusta producer, but Rabobank experts warn that Brazil could soon overtake it thanks to its well-organized supply chain, creating significant price competition.
With the increased supply of Robusta from Brazil, the global coffee market will change. If overall coffee prices continue to rise, consumers will tend to switch to Robusta due to its more affordable price. This shift in consumption will directly affect the demand and price of Robusta coffee in the long term.
