Vietnam’s coffee industry is experiencing a year of strong growth. In the first 9 months of 2024, coffee export turnover reached nearly 7 billion USD, up 61% over the same period last year. This is a big step forward, bringing the coffee industry closer to the goal of maintaining its leading position in the world in terms of export.

According to the Import-Export Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade), in September alone, Vietnam exported about 84,000 tons of coffee. The average price reached 5,658 USD/ton, 45% higher than last year. The high coffee selling price is an important factor pushing the export turnover to a record high.

The US market is opening up more opportunities for Vietnamese coffee after the country imposed a 50% reciprocal tax on Brazilian goods. As Brazilian coffee becomes more expensive, Vietnamese coffee has a more competitive advantage to gain more market share in one of the world's largest markets.

In Europe, the EUDR anti-deforestation regulation has just been postponed to the end of 2026. This is an important advantage, as Vietnam is currently one of the few countries that are ready to meet the new standard. This will not only help stabilize coffee exports but also strengthen Vietnam's reputation and position in the international market.

Despite impressive export results, Vietnam’s coffee industry still faces many challenges. Most of the growth in turnover comes from high selling prices, not from sustainable development in deep processing. Standardizing quality and building a national coffee brand still requires more efforts.

If we take advantage of the US and European markets, while promoting processing and increasing added value, Vietnamese coffee has every chance to maintain and improve its position on the world map.
