Over the past three years, the sharp rise in coffee prices has benefited farmers and coffee holders. However, for some businesses, it has been a nightmare.

Recently, two major Brazilian coffee exporters belonging to the Montesanto group filed for bankruptcy protection due to severe financial difficulties. The main reason stemmed from soaring coffee prices and farmers reneging on agreements, failing to supply coffee at agreed-upon prices and instead selling at higher prices. This resulted in significant losses for the companies, as they were forced to purchase coffee at higher prices to fulfill previously signed contracts at lower prices.

In Vietnam, contract breaches have also occurred in previous coffee cases, although not as serious as in Brazil. When coffee prices rose too sharply, the supply chain was disrupted, many businesses were unable to fulfill contracts and had to take each other to court to resolve disputes.

Learning from previous incidents, this year, Vietnamese coffee exporters have adjusted their strategy, opting for near-term contracts instead of long-term ones to ensure business efficiency and minimize risks.

World coffee prices today

Coffee prices on the world market are also subject to many fluctuations:

Robusta coffee (London):

Delivery in May 2025: Decreased by $74/ton, to $5,353/ton.

July 2025 delivery: Decreased by $68/ton, to $5,318/ton.

The weekend trading session continued the sharp decline from the previous day due to forecasts of rain in Brazil. According to Somar Meteorologia, Brazil will experience prolonged rain showers from this weekend into next week, helping to alleviate the long-standing drought.

Robusta coffee prices are also being affected by reports from the General Statistics Office of Vietnam. According to these reports, Vietnam's coffee exports in February increased by 6.6% year-on-year, reaching 169,000 tons. Furthermore, weather forecasts indicate daily rain over the next week in the Central Highlands – Vietnam's largest coffee-growing region – adding further pressure to Robusta coffee prices.

Robusta coffee inventories rose to a one-month high on Friday, reaching 4,356 lots, becoming a negative factor for the price of this type of coffee.

Technically, Robusta coffee prices are currently trading within a support range of $5,270/ton and a resistance level of $5,600/ton. If the price breaks out of this range, the market could see significant fluctuations.
